Paper Lampshade Design

The Brief for this project was to create a lampshade suspended from the ceiling entirely from paper. A main focus was on using geometric folds and shapes instead of intricate details and design, minimalism was the goal.
My lamp was a process of trial and error, which ultimately allowed me to research different shapes and forms before settling on the vision I wanted to move forward with. I was originally interested with star shape that wrapped around the bulb.
The idea of combining a collective of identical pieces similar to the star shade already fascinated me. I settled on a hexagon as the star of lampshade and created 16 hexagonal panels that would connect together to mimic the shape of a snowflake. My choice of paper was card as my previous attempts using copier paper were too flimsy and unsustainable. The idea behind using a snowflake was its one of a kind nature.
The crossover between each panel created a really nice layering of paper which in turn allowed an emphasis on different parts of the shade from the light. This layering allowed for a warm, inviting light to creep out of different sections and light up a room.
NIVIS's true potential can only be seen once it has light passing through it. The shape of the snowflake is revealed through the light and easily becomes the centrepiece of any room its hung.
